Sony to Use Ariba's Indirect Materials Procurement System in Group Companies August 29, 2001 (TOKYO) -- Sony Corp. decided to integrate its procurement management system of indirect materials such as office supplies using Ariba Inc.'s products. About 180,000 employees of the worldwide Sony Group will use Ariba's procurement management system, dubbed "Ariba Buyer." The electronics maker plans to procure indirect materials totaling 65 million yen via the Internet in two years. (120.20 yen = US$1) Teruaki Aoki, Sony's chief information officer and corporate executive vice president, said, "We will be able to decrease the system's cost in all of our group by integrating the infrastructure of the procurement management system." The Sony Group so far has built its procurement management system by implementing SAP AG's products and Commerce One Inc.'s products individually, depending on areas and companies. Aoki continued, "We have so far employed the products of multiple vendors to build up one system, which wasted money."
