By paying more for AMD chips of a given frequency, just as they paid more for IBM and Cyrix PR rated chips.

IBM and Cyrix did Ok until the PR200 (166 Clock) chip was competing with a 300MHZ PII that was 50% faster than the PR200 Cyrix.

While it was PR200 Cyrix vs. similar performing 200MHZ PII, Cyrix did very well - During the summer of 1997, Cyrix had a larger market share than AMD did.
