Pete,

re:"Why do you think that switching EV6 for a HT link and losing the memory controllers (not for those with integrated video) in a typical northbridge would be so hard? Since at least two northbridges will be out in Q4-01 using HT links, adding a second HT should take far less time. There are at least 4 different manufacturers readying HT linked AGP chipsets. AMD could be very well building the equivalent of 761 for Hammer and be ready on Hammers release.

Remember the memory controller(s) are on the Hammer CPU die itself which makes the current northbridges into a simple HT switch between AGP and the other HT link. Others are a switch to connect a PCI 66/64 bus, a switch to connect a PCI 33/32 bus and a switch for all the other high speed pluggable busses you can think of. A HT linked southbridge completes the chip set."

As always you oversimplify everything.

And underestimate what it takes to get the platform out in volume.

As a case in point.

Palmino is also delayed for desktops due to MB issue per Tom's hardware site.

Apparently a timing issue requiring a filter change IIRC.

Now with your logic how can this HAPPEN?

We are using SAME chipset for pally as Athlon.

And yet if we assume Pally samples have been out since late last year.

And yet almost a year later NO introduction on desktop.

AMD's infrastructure program is run by the three stooges.

The good guys bust their buns developing a great chip.

Stooge Number 1: Aha great chip.

Hmm - lets send it to the chipset guys.

Hmm - Aha we have a problem - timing problems.

We must fix it.

4 months go by.

Stooge Number 2: Aha great chip and great chipset.

Lets send it to the MB guys in taiwan now.

Oops we have noise/yield problem.

4 months go by.

They have a great MB,chipset AND CPU.

Stooge Number 3:

Aha finally we have everything.

Lets start production and 4 months later production rolls into your neighbourhood store.

And before you know it they have pissed a year away.

regards,

Kash
