Russia rejects Iran's proposal for five-split of Caspian

Russia Thursday said it does not accept Iran's proposal to divide the Caspian Sea into five equal parts, Deputy Foreign Minister Viktor Kalyuzhnyy said.

"Moscow sticks to the joint position, which had been chosen by Russia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan in determining of Caspian Sea status," said Kaluzhniy. Russia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan want the Caspian Sea split into five sovereign sectors by median lines while Iran believes that the sea should either remain in joint use or should be divided into five equal parts - 20% for each.

Earlier this week, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Ahani travelled to Baku for talks with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Vilayat Guliyev. Ahani said Iran and Azerbaijan had agreed to seriously follow up the Caspian issues through political consultation and technical negot
