My understanding is that he was active in the organization, he may have been in a leadership position, I can't recall exactly. His outspoken views on pro-life and his friendship with Cardinal O'Connor caused a rift which widened over time when he disagreed with various stands the ACLU took and some they didn't take. On his way out the door he spoke of the Stalinist mindset that had taken over there.
