Wow, that wasn't exactly the answer I expected. I think there is whole army out there doing their versions of channel checks. I have yet for anybody to divulge exactly how they are done, maybe to protect themselves. Typically you see analysts cite channel checks as their reasoning behind their statements about companies before the mid quarter update, a change in their revenue or earnings estimates, and comments made at the end of the quarter before earnings with regard to whether they think the company will hit the numbers. I guess the thing that bothers me is how can anybody "anticipate" earnings like this unless one performs the defacto insider channel check? Seems to me betting on anything else is would be too risky to the professional player. Until I read your response I was seriously considering calling some shipping departments outside the companies in question. How do I mimic what the analyst is doing without getting into trouble? I also don't think I even remember seeing the buzzword channel check until around Reg. FD, or maybe they used to do the checks, got lazy and were then exclusively getting their confidential information from company insiders and then I'm not sure how the information legally flowed to clients and trading. But now with FD out there, it seems their forced to go back to the legwork method of channel checks again or maybe for the first time.
