Did you see the movie about stevie smith? It was very well done. Make sure you see it if you can find it. I might have a copy of it around here. I'll check.

As you know one of my favorite poems is by Stevie Smith- Was He Married.

I read that poem when I was very young, 11 or 12, and it spoke to me. I've never forgotten that poem. I also have never forgotten the Garden of Proserpine because of these lines, and excuse me if I get them a bit wrong:

We thank with brief thanksgiving
whatever Gods there be
that no man lives forever
that dead men rise up never
that even the weariest river winds somewhere safe to sea

I cannot tell you how many times those lines come to me. It's not an especially brilliant poem. But the sentiment feels like it is part of me.

Oh that's so true- I always write a lot more when I am miserable. I am hoping empty nest syndrome sets off a severe bout of unhappiness so that I can write penetrating, neurotic essays and poetry again. It's not working so far.

I'll have to look for a collection of SS during the next 1/2 Price visit. Sadly, we have vowed not to go every month now, but only every other as part of our College Tuition Austerity Budget Plan. In fact, those bills alone may be enough to induce a clinical depression in me.
