I think it's important to understand what diversification is...

Intel is merely diversifying into other areas of computer tech. They are still not diversified because the whole sector has been hit.

---You seem to have a very narrow definition of what "diversification" means. It seems like you're saying that if a semiconductor company goes into Networking Equipment, or Wireless Communication equipment, it's not diversifying. I think it is.

Webster also seems to agree with a wider definition:

One entry found for diversify.
Main Entry: di·ver·si·fy
Pronunciation: d&-'v&r-s&-"fI, dI-
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): -fied; -fy·ing
Date: 15th century
transitive senses
1 : to make diverse : give variety to <diversify a course of study>
2 : to balance (as an investment portfolio) defensively by dividing funds among securities of different industries or of different classes
3 : to increase the variety of the products of
intransitive senses
1 : to produce variety
2 : to engage in varied operations

- di·ver·si·fi·ca·tion /-"v&r-s&-f&-'kA-sh&n/ noun
- di·ver·si·fi·er /-'v&r-s&-"fI(-&)r/ noun

Now if they were into some completely different sector like oil then they would be truely diversified.

--- A Semiconductor Maker going into oil.... Yeah, that would be real smart... Not.

I'm afraid, however that there will be no where to hide but cash...like Dan Boy Niles says...
Intel is no different than anyone else...they just have to pull in the reigns and ride it out. There will always be causualties and layoffs...

Jim

---Once again, I did not say that intel wouldn't be affected, just that it is better to spread out the pain. I'm in favor of being proactive, I think that's the best way to go. You seem to be advocating doing nothing and "riding it out". Different opinion.

Works for me.
