As I understand it, sometimes it was called the Republican party, sometimes the Democratic-Republican party.

This site uses the term Republican party exclusively.

This one uses Democratic-Republican for his party.

Your choice. But I find it gets better discussions going if you say he was the first Republican elected to the presidency.

But the present Republican party is generally considered to have started with the election of Lincoln.

Either way, whether Jefferson or Lincoln was the first Republican president, it's not a bad heritage.

Only wish they had candidates of remotely the same caliber today.
