As a boomer parent of a singlet five year-old, I find the empty nest discussion fascinating. Will be sixty when he's sixteen, probably too addled by senility to respond to his upcoming adolescent foibles.

Are all five year-olds as eccentric as mine? He is singularly focused on one fantasy at a time, the current one being pirates and piracy. The passion and energy for the subject is absolutely amazing. We have more pirate paraphernalia strewn about our home than anyone can possibly imagine. His previous fixation was Paul Bunyan.

He literally lives, eats, and breathes his obsessions, which last about three or four months at a time. I'm slightly concerned, but he's otherwise a deeply happy and well adjusted child so I suppose everything is fine.

Gee, I guess I'm just a cold and uncaring parent compared to you and your wife.
