Windsock,

Now that AMD is 600 MHz behind and increasing, you can't change the scoring system.

Technically, windsock, it is a good strategy to have to "show" that its uPs are still "superior" to Intel's.

Think about it this way. What would you do if you were AMD? Of course, you are going to try to change the "method" of scoring in order to show that you are still competitive.

The main problem I see with Intel is this. AMD has been dominant at the lower end and is more than willing to sacrifice profitablity for market share. Intel responds two ways...

(1) Attacking the lower end market.
(2) Start an attack at the higher end market.

Now, when Intel attacks the higher end, one can make a comparison (but not the best), that Intel is similiar to AMD. They are competing against the likes of IBM and SUN.

I feel that uP manufacturers know that in the current time, the uP is a cash cow. However, in the future, the cash flows from the uP business will not be there. Intel is trying to find the next cash cow.

The problem is that Intel has been relatively unsuccessfull whenever they have branched out from the uP.

Be thankful that AMD is there and nips at Intel's heels every so often.

Windsock, <So the question becomes which "average" set of instructions are best to use.>

Traditionally SPEC has been used for this very purpose. Microarchitectural enhancements have been evaluated by their ability to handle common blocks of code found in the SPEC application suite.

Dear Windsock:

I subscribe to performance or IPC*clock being the better measure. The speed at which a given task or set of tasks, that one does often, are done using data pulled from one's own usage over some period, is much better and far more desirable than even universal benchmarks for a far more global audience.
