Why not just state IP/s instead?

I guess for the simple reason that Intel won't oblige us and publish the IP/s for their products. So, if we do IP/s, then the consumer is faced with a weird choice - comparing a 2GHz P4 with a 3.2G IP/s, which may or may not be the comparable product...

By using the M and G nomenclature, we make it braindead simple for the consumer - clearly, she will be inclined to compare the 2GHz P4 to the Athlon XP 2G, and conveniently, the PC World comparison will be posted right next to the PC to reinforce this comparison. Then, she notes she is paying about 200 bucks less for the Athlon version, and goes for it...
