Don't overdo the safety!

Good point. Though I'm not so sure about blowing stuff up.

and generally roll rocks and themselves over cliffs.

When my son was still in his buggy we had him sunning on the slope in front of the house, which slopes down to a rock cliff about 20 feet high at the base of which are loose stones and rocks and water when the tide is in. For some reason the brake slipped and he started careening down the hill. I don't think I've ever moved so fast in my life. I lunged and grabbed his rear axle as the buggy was about 2 feet from the cliff edge. So you do need to be careful what cliffs you let them roll themselves over. This one would, I fear, have been fatal, or close to it, for an infant.

But yes, they do need to engage in safe danger. When they were old enough to walk they went climbing all over those cliffs. One of the girls got stuck once half-way up and I had to come do a rescue. Also had to rescue Grandma who had gone rushing to the screams (she was watching them at the time while I was inside working) and got stuck herself. Sent my son and other daughter to fetch me, and all ended well. They were, I think, probably four and five at the time. They were out climbing on the cliff again next day, and never got stuck again.
