> I'm thinking the record level of shorts is ominous proof of some vicious volatility yet to come

Hi bob.

I think 'dollar volume' of short sellers exemplifies their risk.
With tech stocks off 80 to 90 percent one would assume that short interest would rise but the risk they are taking may or may not rise.

I think we are in a different evironment (sic) ....(I left the typo 'cause it fit,,,LOL) .... , a new world evironment, a different era, if you will.

When in stock market history have you had the HUGE wash of paper and IPO's....
When in the history of the market have you had the massive CONVERTIBLE stuff and Options stuff....
When in the history of the market have you had (MASSIVE) INSIDER selling in BS ideas. ( i site ARIBA for example)

(I won't even do the PRO-FORMA rant)...

I don't know. I think it's much harder to sqeeze shorts in a bear market environment than it is when floats are low and stocks are going up. That is when you can panic shorts a lot easier. I agree that shorts are bold. but they got the crap kicked out of them for years and years.

It's just momentum shorting. That's all we got here.
The sentiment is ripe for it. People are losing interest in the market. They put their head in the sand. the stocks sell off. They hit new weekly and monthly lows. More people lose interest. Need to pay off bills. Or whatever.

What is going to be a catalyst for a change. Technology is so stinkin' cheap. Programable microprocessors are so stinkin' cheap. Education is cheap. Knowledge is cheap. It's all out there to be absorbed and assimulated.

The public is understanding the market moves on the will of a couple of market makers. People are understanding that. IT's no different on the NYSE it's just controlled by a different group of doods. that's all it is. That's all that's going on here.

The fundamental basis of what people have come to believe. It's all in question. I got no answers here. I know not where this is going. I don't think people all assimulate information and come to decisions at the same rate.

I do know that. I do understand that.

Sorry for the disjointed ramble....But it's what i've got after a couple cups of Coffee. :0)

Have a great day...
