Strange question......I have been to Pittsburgh a couple of times, the last time perhaps 20 years ago. One of the things that struck me forcibly was the persistence of ethnic identification. I saw Lithuanian country clubs, Croatian social clubs, Latvian meeting halls, and so on. There were numerous Eastern Rite churches, including Uniate churches (Roman Catholic, but Eastern Rite). I saw the largest Orthodox Jewish enclave that I had seen outside of New York. Along with the odd topography (all the mountains impeding a regular highway system, all of the towns oddly positioned with respect to the city, including one completely surrounded by it) it made me think that a piece of Eastern Europe had been staked out, side by side with the WASPs in Mount Lebanon.......
