BMW,

Re: "To be fair, AMD's .13u bulk process is still set for 1H02."

Now why would I want to do that. <ggg> Let's see if they can
meet that ... BTW, didn't someone (Dan3?) state that .13um bulk
would be available by end of '01 ??!!

Make It So,
Yousef

Wanna, Re: >To be fair, AMD's .13u bulk process is still set for 1H02.

1H02 is 6 months long and that's a very long period of time, which makes AMD's roadmap on that very vague.

I listened to the Ron Herb CC and he denigrated Intel several times, mostly on the IPC thing with P4, die size comparisons, performance of AMD vs. Intel based PCs. Finally, the guy said "even Intel understands that it's IPC X Clock Speed". Even Intel. In my experience, slamming the competition is a sure sign of lack of confidence and backpedaling. You don't hear the leaders like IBM, Cisco and Intel doing this.

Asked about what 0.13 would do for performance, he estimated 20 - 30% improvement over 0.18, which he expects to get to 1.7 to 2.0 GHz. That's bookmarkable (the 1.7 to 2.0 on 0.18). Asked about SOI performance improvement predictions, he said "it's too early to call, as there is a wide range of estimates from people in the industry." From the industry! When will AMD have a clue on this, which they're basing so much of their performance on?

Overall on Ron Herb, he put on a brave, hopeful persona on the call, but a lot of ifs and maybes when answering the questions. The old "low visibility" thingy, can't blame anyone for that. Q3 may be the bottom and Q4 might show resumed growth for AMD, he said.

One comment on production of the CC: you could hardly hear the questions from the analysts, wherever they were. The AMD guy was clear and concise.

Of the markets that affect AMD, he thinks networking is most in the dumpster, although he said at least twice that their Flash market hopefully bottoms this quarter. On PCs, he's more bullish, said AMD is getting 40% of retail notebooks, 45% of retail desktops, but didn't say how measured. The fact that he didn't say sales makes me think it's in units built, or something like that.
