None of these states is fascist. And why are you fixating on Russia? Russia is old news, on its way to becoming a third rate power. Turkey is the rising power. So much for your rising power....Crisis-hit economy sharply shrinks in first half Elif Kelebek Turkey's crisis-wrecked economy posted a record contraction in the second quarter of the year, bringing the first half shrinkage to 8.5 percent, data released by the State Institute of Statistics (DIE) showed yesterday. Gross national product (GNP) contracted by a record 11.8 percent in the second quarter of the year as compared to the same period of 2000, after Turkey was forced to abandon an International Monetary Fund (IMF)-backed crawling peg and float the lira amid a financial crisis in February. The figure came on top of a 4.5 percent shrinkage in the first quarter. Gross domestic product (GDP) contraction was relatively moderate at 9.3 percent in the second quarter and 6.1 percent in the first half, which economists tied to a decline in external factor income as Turkish expatriates avoided bringing in their savings amid sharp financial volatility. "The gap between GDP and GNP contraction is important, because it shows that lack of confidence in the economy and financial instability have not only deterred capital inflows from Turkish workers but prompted an outflow," Finansinvest economist Ahmet Orhun Akarli suggested. The figures, which appeared worse than market expectations, denote a catastrophic growth performance also due to an unfavorable base effect, because the GNP posted a strong 6.1 percent growth in 2000, analysts also said. "We were expecting a sharp contraction stemming mainly from industry and domestic trade, but the farm sector performance was also a bad surprise," said Banu Kivci, economist with private Disbank. Turkey's industrial sector contracted by 8.5 percent on the year in the second quarter, construction by 10.1 percent and commerce by 11.5 percent. The farm sector shrinkage was at a significant 4.9 percent. [snip]turkishdailynews.com As for "None of these states is fascist" , precisely! The keyword here is "neo-" . These countries are on a neo- fascist track. Take Israel: rub off Shimon Peres from the government picture and look what's left... Ariel Sharon and his jackboot gang! As regards Russia, suffice it to mention Chechnya, the '99 apartment bombings, etc. Europe, as usual, is a subtler case... If Adolf Hitler were still living today, he'd probably change a lot of things in his power quest. First, Mr A. Hitler would just scrap his military getup along with all the Gothic gear peculiar to Nazi extravaganza... He'd dress casually in pinstripe suit, perhaps with a crocodile tie as a touch of firmness... Second, as a clever politician, he'd open his cabinet to a few token Jews --perhaps a few Turkish-Germans as well. And, last but not least, he wouldn't resort to warfare to achieve his political goals: the supremacy of corporate Germany (together with her satellite countries) and a proper legislation, both at the European and German levels, should be enough to enforce a clean, gentle, "democratic" Euro-Reich... See what's the "neo-" thing all about?? Gus.
