The Desiderata was everywhere in the 70's, so much that it became the target of National Lampoon. I'd found the references to the original author that Win Smith did while looking for the Deteriorata version (many sites had the two side by side). I have to admit I was warped by National Lampoon and my transition from Mad Magazine (National Lampoon always seemed to me sort of an R rated Mad). Who can forget the memorable "We will shoot this dog if you don't buy this magazine" issue. (A picture of a sad-eyed cocker spaniel with a pistol to its head). Or, the "Spring Fascism" issue including Nazis "Dog-fishing" in Central Park from the back of pickup trucks. I believe that they were holding up some skinned dog carcasses of pets that were snared using high test line and T-bones. In that issue they also lampooned sports and fashion magazines mercilessly. Entries like "OutSSide" (lightning bolt esses). I don't remember the Nazi fashion magazine name. I attribute at least some of my dementia to Nat'l Lampoon and too many hours of Dr. Demento, Monty Python, Cheech and Chong, Richard Pryor, and the "Seven Dirty Words" sketches (and other great routines of George Carlin).
