I think that gao seng's point is that if we did not have the rights, there would be no basis for denouncing the abuses. The abuses may have highlighted the rights, they did not create them. Where do they come from? Unless there is a moral order from which they are derived, they are somewhat shaky. I would say that gao is wrong that belief in God is necessary to construe a moral order, derived from normative ideas akin to "health" or "sanity" (justice and good character, for example). Seeking to define what fulfills human needs, and perfects human nature, may suffice. However, I think that gao is right, that belief in God is solider than skepticism about the ultimate nature of the universe, or pessimism about finding an underlying design.......
