pcstel- If we are in a recession, no question things happen slower. I don't see how we go from there to "loss of worldwide upgrades of W-CDMA". Just slower. But where the gsm/gprs systems go slow, if they compete directly with 1x, their deficiencies will be pretty obvious. This won't happen in Europe. It will happen in NA, LA and Asia though. Whether it will matter in China, or whether voice is all anybody cares about there, may make the "ring of fire" less effective. Have a great weekend everybody!
