I think most people who've actually done comparisons have found that the Athlon is faster than the P4 because its architecture is so much more efficient. The P4 may get more clock cycles, but the Athlon gets more done in each cycle.

Unfortunately, Intel has done a very good job of conditioning people to believe that GHz is all that matters.
