Yet the criminals continue to tote their guns--because they didn't disarm when the government ordered everyone to turn in their guns. These stories below--and the steady stream of news reports I get every week--should be evidence enough that guns in the hands of law-abiding Americans are used every single day to save lives. --Hampton Roads, Virginia. Late Wednesday afternoon, three men wearing masks and bandannas burst into an apartment. One of the men inside the apartment, a guest of the tenants, immediately drew his gun and opened fire. He hit all three attackers. One predator, 25-year-old Derrick Lyons, died on the scene. Another, Marquis Corbin, drove to his mother's house but was later arrested. Malike Allen, the third intruder, was caught, too. It turns out that police had been looking for Corbin for a probation violation in June. He'd been convicted of shooting someone in 1995. The cops had also been looking for Lyons, who had been charged but not convicted of fatally shooting a man in the face as he sat in his car in 1996. Thanks to the quick thinking of that guest, Derrick Lyons will never terrorize the residents of Hampton Roads again. dailypress.com --Tampa, Florida. Late Wednesday night, three men robbed a desk clerk at a local motel and started pistol-whipping him. The motel's owner spotted the attack on a security monitor and confronted them in the parking lot. He fired several shots and hit one of the robbers. The other two men ran. The wounded robber is in critical but stable condition with a gunshot wound to his back. Police say the motel owner acted in self-defense. Too bad he wasn't a better shot. tampatrib.com --Also in Tampa...21-year-old Wayne Warren got into a fight with his girlfriend, 18-year-old Arlena Ottinger, at a sandwich shop at around 11 a.m. Wednesday. Ottinger left with their 10-month-old son. Warren followed. When she stopped at an intersection, Warren ran to her car, broke a window, and pulled her by the hair. Bystanders saw what was going on and intervened. Arlena Ottinger ran home with the baby--with Warren in pursuit. He banged on the doors and windows of her home. Then Arlena's father, 47-year-old Arl Ottinger, came out and ordered Warren to leave. Warren refused. Arl Ottinger pulled out a .38-caliber revolver and pointed it at Warren. When Warren threatened him, Ottinger put a bullet in his arm. Wayne Warren has been charged with battery and burglary of an occupied residence. Arl Ottinger has not been charged; police say he was defending his family. In May, Warren had been charged with kidnapping and battery, but the charges were dropped. Here's hoping he now understands that "go away" means "go away or I'll shoot you, you worthless, abusive scumbag." And the chunk of flesh missing from his arm should serve as a handy reminder of the time he dared to mess with a man's daughter. boortz.com
