You bring up a good point. With the large number of bankruptcies this past year funds undoubtedly already have a phenomenal amount of real recognized losses. Money flowing in and out of funds each week has to have forced them to take additional losses selling stock. Some funds may have such great losses that they could be looking into trying to take some offsetting gains. Need to look and see if anything in the portfolio has risen significantly this year (not likely!!)

Can funds carry losses forward like individuals? If not, and they pass them onto consumers won't that flow through on individual tax returns next year, further exacerbating the runaway budget spending problems.
