there are two schools of thought.

Scientism and theism. The former says there is no purpose to life. I fail to see how this school of thought can produce a democracy in which individual rights supercede those of society.

By that I mean society does not have the right to harrass a person for his beliefs, or confiscate his property on a whim, or...

Whew. That requires some thinking about. The usual dichotomy is that the process is more important than the result. But you've gone a step further; theprocess of thinking about the dichotomy is more important than resolving it.
