It looks like we won't see the Dutch chokers again next year

Ten-man Ireland dump Dutch out of World Cup

DUBLIN, Sept 1 (Reuters) - Ireland assured themselves of a play-off
berth at least in the race to reach the 2002 World Cup finals on Saturday
and all but dumped the Netherlands out of the competition in the process
with a 1-0 win at Lansdowne Road.

The Irish played much of the second half with 10 men after right-back
Gary Kelly was sent off in the 68th minute for a foul on Marc Overmars.
He had been yellow carded for a foul on the same player in the first half.

Six minutes later the home crowd erupted, after a pass from substitute
Steve Finnan found Jason McAteer unmarked in the penalty box. The
Blackburn Rovers player drilled his right foot shot past Edwin van der
Sar.

The Netherlands, who had dominated much of the match, threw men
forward but were unable to breach the Irish defence and barring an
unlikely series of defeats by Portugal or Ireland in the final games, they
are out of the competition.
