What we have now is a mess Agreed. I'd also add that laws have to be enforceable. In the example you used (abusive mates) we get reminded constantly (and sadly)how unprotective restraining orders prove to be. Drug laws, prohibition, prostitution, gambling are also dang hard to enforce because they fight human (mammalian?) behavior.

Laws can work to show an oblivious person they're crossing a line they weren't self aware of. Whether we're talking anger, or drunk behavior or other uncivil behavior, the intervention of law enforcement folks can be a wake-up call.

But again, for your example, I'd say a truly abusive person will remain so because they're driven by an emotional or mental thing that overcomes their reasoning. We can lock 'em up, but if the goal is to change them, treatment usually is more effective.

The anarchist quote defined 'most' folks, not all. I wasn't suggesting law should be eliminated, though I am a strong believer in "the government that governs least, governs best"
