The big fallacy that the Far Left and Far Right share is the urge to personalize economic forces and make everything a matter of morality. Joe Sobran rails against taxes, a socialist would rail against salaries for corporate CEOs. Just looking at the different requirements of the 19th century military and a modern military will show a lot of the reason for the rise in the price of government. We are now supporting several times the original number of Congressmen and staffs; congressional oversight is now much more extensive, and requires much greater committee staffing, than at mid- century; there is an extensive array of national parks and wilderness areas to administer; and so forth. Not to mention that taxation has occurred with representation and democratic debate, which is the sole requirement of procedural fairness. Similarly, when someone question CEO salaries, one merely points out that they are determined by the marketplace, and have a good deal to due with shareholder value. Michael Eisner is paid so much because if he were to leave Disney, its stock would lose a significant amount of equity, because stockholders consider him ultimately responsible for the fortunes of the corporation, and would lose confidence if he left. In neither case is anything nefarious going on........
