Max, you make some good points about design improvements in the core accounting for the speed increase besides the improvements from the process technology. However, I don't think you can discount Intel's claim of being able to get a 65% improvement from their .18u to .13u transition. Some people here have theorized that Intel will get a bit of improvement from implementing the copper interconnects, while AMD has already received the improvement due to that feature in their .18u process. In addition, almost any comparison to prove that fact will have some level of uncertainty in it. Your comment about Coppermine being a major core update, while Tualatin is just a shrink is not true, either. Tualatin had improvements in the hardware prefetching, and also increased the cache size. Relating the improvement that Intel was able to get going from Coppermine to Tualatin says nothing about the improvement they will get going from Willamette to Northwood, and also says nothing about the actual performance gains due to the process. It seems we've hit a brick wall, which might make the argument moot. I don't know any better way to prove that Intel's .18u to .13u transition will enable any better frequencies than AMD's .18u to .13u transition. I do think that AMD will need SOI to even match the improvement that Intel can get out of their transition, though, but that's just MHO.
