out of curiosity how much consensus have you
built among clients while shaking them down for cash?

Clients as what? Depends entirely on what role I'm in.

I have legal clients. I'm there to help them understand what it is possible to do for them, help them make the choice of what they want to seek, and try to accomplish that for them. In those cases, I only try to build consensus when that's their chosen goal.

I also work as a mediator. In that case, I don't represent either party, but work for BOTH parties, trying to helm THEM craft a consensus agreement.

In both, I'm quite successful, as it happens. Not 100%, of course, but pretty good.

In both, I get paid for my services, just like any business person. Plumbers, roofers, hardware stores, barbers, lawyers, mediators, restaurants, etc. all provide goods and/or services, and expect to get paid for them. Just as, I expect, you expect to get paid for your services.

The term "shake down" is, of course, intended to be perjorative, but reflects on you, not on me. That may the the way you think about the relationship between yourself and whoever pays you, whether a boss, customers, clients, or whatever. As for me, I don't "shake down" anybody. I simply charge for my services.

If you consider that you are "shaking down" your boss every day you go in to work, well, that's your choice.
