Ref < Windows/386 was released in 1987, accompanied by an advertising blitz extolling the benefits of 32 bit computing > Windows 386 was a joke,because no 32 bit applications ran under it. Windows 3.0 was released in 1991, and that finally had applications written for it, and finally the Wintel computing had a decent set of GUI applications. The 386 took off so that people could run their DOS programs faster. The 486 took off because of the acceptance of Windows3.0, and its increased demand of computer speed.
