CombJelly, see my other response to Tench. I don't think the P4 was cancelled but definitely something major happened to its design in 99 after the Athlon came out at 600+ Mhz

Comb- I don't think the P4 was ever cancelled but the program was always more or less an insurance policy for the unlikely case where the Itanium was a dud. Well the Itanium was a dud, so the P4 became real important.
