Debated many times on this thread.

At the behest of IBM in the 80s, Intel licensed its architecture to AMD. I and others believe that Intel created built-in price competition for itself. The license is so broad that it is a bit of a misnomer to say that Intel has proprietary control over the architecture. (As if, MSFT had granted a license to apple so broad that Apple could spew forth all flavors of Windows).

I view Intel as a king. It executes well--until the recent Craig Barrett regime (marked by bumbling through successive quarters of missed numbers)--in a market where there are switching costs.
