Milo,

this is from the "Conclusion and Final Words" by amdmb.com (http://www.amdmb.com/article-display.php?ArticleID=116&PageID=8):

"As you can no doubt tell, the VIA KT266A chipset amazed and astounded me! For a chipset that had very little build up and wasn't very talked about before its launch, it gave a marvelous performance, and will do so in a motherboard near you soon for a minor increase in price. While I can't give out an Editor's Choice award to a chipset directly, if a board can be released with this same performance and features we are seeing most everywhere else now, I foresee one in the works! VIA has done fantastic work spicing the KT266A chipset into something every hardcore PC enthusiast will want: the fastest Athlon chipset on the market."

Milo, Re: VIA KT266A benchmarks

Wow, that's spectacular! I would have imagined improvements in the single digits percentage range for memory bandwidth in Sandra over AMD760 but certainly not 25-30%. I think we underestimated VIA. Both their new Athlon and their P4 chipset seem to perform extremely well. Looks like their experience in designing DDR memory controllers pays off big time.

With these benchmark scores in mind AMD will be able to compete with P4 much better in memory dependant benchmarks like Media Encoder or Quake III. Even in SPECfp2000 we should see a big improvement. So AMD's new performance rating will be even more conservative than we previously thought and AMD will probably be able to regain the performance crown with the 1.53 GHz Palomino. That's certainly very good news after all those setbacks in the last few months.
