I found the segment with the bank manager the least...REAL. I liked how the abortion was handled though. That was real. But the rest of it wasn't. And that section was jarring. I love the two sisters. I thought Glen Close's character, and her relationship with her mother was wonderful drawn. It was minimalist- but as in the Yellow Wallpaper- you got the sense of her life, from that very small perfect picture of it. That section was a jewel.

And Calista Flockhart IS a good actress. And her dying lover was very good.

My husband and I have talked about the dwarf episode ever since. I think the most powerful part of that was the humanity of that segment. The normalcy, of it, if you will. It wasn't about him being a dwarf. That was an element, but it really wasn't the issue. Which I LOVED. I like it when things would normally be "issues" in AMerican films, aren't. American films are so often preachy- which may be what you meant when you said they editorialize. I HATE preachy movies. I HATE an obvious message. Give me nuance, give me LIFE with all it's contradictions. That's one of the many things I liked about the movie (and what I felt the bank manager segment lacked) NUANCE, REALITY, DEPTH. Glad you liked it. I wouldn't mind hearing what you didn't like. I promise not to call you Miss Negativity to your face.....
