There is an incredible amount of manufacturing activity in the surrounding areas of Detroit. Many shops have signs out front advertising skilled workers they need (welders, press operators, machinists, etc). They chain together a list so folks know. Six months ago most of the lists were empty. In the last few days I have been out and about and noticed that many have at least one type of skilled worker needed and quite a few have 3 or more posted. Looks like layoffs are over, at least around here. There may still be repercussions to be felt from those already enacted.
