Re: "Few countries of Israel's age and size have welcomed immigrants from over one hundred countries, of all colors and tongues,...."

C'mon, we all know that it's not indiscriminate immigration you're talking about: a prerequisite to emigrate in Israel is to be a JEW --or married to a JEW, etc.

As for: "To criticize policies of the Government of Israel - or of any country - is legitimate, even vital; indeed as a democratic state many Israelis do just that. But there is profound difference between criticizing a country, and denying it's right to exist. Anti-Zionism, the denial of Jews the basic right to a home, is nothing but anti-Semitism, pure and simple."

Who's ever denied Israel's right to exist? What Arabs and other anti-Zionists don't like about Israel is not the State of Israel per se but rather its racist --or ethnic if you like-- polity. Indeed, just as in order to emigrate in Australia one must be white (preferably of European stock), in order to legally settle in Israel one has to be Jewish! It's that simple, and it's that intolerable (in both cases). The Jews can, have always, and hopefully will, exist without a garrison state of their own. After all, there're much more Jews living and thriving outside Israel than within it. Unless the state of Israel has been "secretely" devised as a sort of genetic incubator the size of a country, whose main purpose is to breed 100%-Jewish people, there's no urgency to maitain it as a "Jew only" fortress. Jews are not an endangered species: they can freely settle in Europe, in the US, in South Africa, Latin and Central America (Costa Rica), Australia, etc. and, as far as anti-Semitic persecutions are concerned, the state of Israel is no all-inclusive policy. To conflate the survival of the Jewish people with the Israeli state's is a fraud.

Gus.
