Tony: from what I read, that platform may not be out until Northwood is. What then?

Well&#133 It's a completely unexpected (massive) performance gain from a (presumably) mainstream chipset. It's hard to tell how much gain will come from Northwood, but AMD is certainly better situated than they would otherwise have been.

Of course, time will tell if the chipset is actually stable etc. And then there's that bit about Palomino's not working well at 266MHz FSB with certain chipsets / motherboards.

SiS have a couple of chipsets in the pipeline (one integrated, one not) and ALi has one as well.

Northwood better be good...because a 1.533 Palomino will be right there with a 2.2 P4.

If anything this new VIa chipset gives nForce and sis735 a little competition.
What really shocked me about that KT266A platform was the increase in bandwidth benchmarks...as useless as they appear to be...It did seem to translate nicely into higher Quake 3 scores..
As stupid as AMD is to let Intel choose the benchmarks, they seem to be able to fight hard with this new chipset...

Tony, Re: that platform [KT266A] may not be out until Northwood is.

KT266A motherboards will be available for purchase this month according to MSI:

planet3dnow.de

May I recommend our K7T266 Pro2, available at the end of Sept., w/ VIA revised KT266A chipset. We will launch it at our web site next month.

Yours sincerely,

(note that the mail is from August, 28th, so next month = September)

And Anand, Tom etc. will probably use it for benchmarking anyway,
