There is tremendous overlap beween HP and CPQ. Will both HP and CPQ PC brands survive? Same question for Intel based servers, from 1-2 way to 8-way and going to 16 way Xeons, and 4-8-16-32 way Itaniums. Some unique product lines are HPs printers and CPQ's Tandem NSK servers and IPaqs. Back to the overlapping products, they are huge, as should be the cutbacks. To me, Greenspan's legacy continues to be established as the high tech industry destroyer.

Ref < HP-Compaq merger >

I agree that the merger provides enormous synergies since going forward they have common platforms for
(a) Itanium systems
(b) Xeon based servers
(c) Common PC platforms

That was my first reaction
zdnet.com

The history of computer company marriages has not been great. However in this case both companies are abandoning their legacy systems for a common Itanium platform. This is good news for the Itanium, since the new company will be the equal if not bigger than IBM. There will be greater economy of scale, for the Itanium software development. Since the HP-Compaq platform will be so big that the software writers will port the software first to this platform.

But the flip side is that it is difficult to consolidate large companies. This is a major management challenge.

Now suddenly IBM may be a Number 2 in computers.
