The numbers being tossed around about the new entity's combined $87B revenues are a joke. What, no overlap? The cultural assimilation ain't gonna happen, as you note Charles, they'll have to dump stuff for FTC approval, and there'll be slashes of redundancy right and left.

What will remain is a bunch of confused IT customers, a major product line in confounding flux, management spending all its time trying to cobble together internal and external explanations for feuding sales forces during product transitions, a no-margin PC business struggling to deal with Dell, the printers they already have, and a 65,000-person services organization that will take years to figure out what they're selling (while they're getting cut to a 40,000-person services organization).

Carly got her Hall of Fame spot. Good Lord, let's hope Scott & Ed can make something out of this.

Dear Charles: I have a question. If you were a customer, or potential customer of CPQ in the server line, would you feel any reason to be concerned as to ongoing support and service for the system you own or are contemplating buying?? JDN
