Nokia to ship 50 mln Java devices 2002,100 mln '03
HELSINKI, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Nokia , the world's largest cellphone maker, reiterated on Tuesday at a time of great market uncertainty it expected to ship 50 million devices powered with Internet-friendly Java (NasdaqNM:SUNW - news) software next year.

``We will ship 50 million Java-enabled devices in 2002, our intention is to double that figure in 2003,'' Nokia Mobile Phone spokesman Tapio Hedman told Reuters.

Java is a software platform aimed to allow programmes to run on many different devices and operating systems, and companies like Nokia hope Sun Microsystem's software will give cellular phones access to a wide range of interactive content including games and financial tools.

Earlier, Nokia's rival Ericsson cast a cloud over the wireless market after it said it did not see any signs of a recovery next year and added that mobile Internet-enabled phones using GPRS technology had not picked up as quickly as hoped.

RE: "I agree that he initial reaction might be negative but it is my belief that renewed merger activity puts a floor in under tech and maybe secures the nasdaq bottom. If so a rally will follow if not today perhaps in a few day once it becomes clear that renewed M&A could be a good thing. Your thoughts!"

Mike, I think there will be more M&A activity in the tech sector in the months to come and if so, should help to set a bottom, but as for an immediate rally based on that belief, well I wouldn't bet on it.
