Bruce, <<professional competitions can be nerve/confidence challenging events>> and ‘rigged’ by nationalist judges (did I say Russians?!). Unfortunately, there's too much of the 'predetermined bias' involved in music competitions throughout the globe. Whether they are rigged or not is another item of discussion. All one can do is show up and try to take home some cash. Of course, the real world of professional music where the money is made is far away from the stage of those rigged competitions. In the past few months, my bro-in-law (cello player) won number 3 in Nuremberg Competition in New York, and special prize (#4) in Geneva International Competition. Not bad. He snagged some cash - or at least some fruit. My wife was trained by Juliard to play the piano, now is in business. She is super confident when appearing in front of crowd, and sink into self-doubt after the fact. Typical example of one type. Each 'performer' has their own individual quirks and strategies for dealing with 'performance' - be it in business, on the music stage, on the field of the sports arena, etc... . Some love it, some hate it, some puke before, some puke afterwards, some puke during ("On Any Given Sunday"). Regardless, it all comes down to who can deliver their product under the spotlight. Anything that happens before, after or any of the individual's thought process is not important. It's the delivered product in the heat of the moment. Some of the most famous and best artists literally had to be pushed on stage to perform. Unfortunately, some of the worst artists love to be out there doing it and not even a hook will remove their love for their craft. Now that we are way OT for this thread, I'll let the collapse of 2001 continue... BB
