As Neo says, we have representatives who vote for these programs and the taxes to pay for them. Any law passed by our representatives that isn't unconstitutional is legit. It may not be wise, but it's legit.

It is legit in the sense that it is constitutional and doesn't otherwise violate the rules for our government but I didn't claim that high taxes are ilegitimate or unconstitutional but rather that they are unjust.

The problem is that someone always decides. Now, of course the world would be a better place if it were I, although I would still have to delegate an awful lot: karen, would you be my vice- decider? We can find some more as we go along. Anyway, representative democracy has the advantage of making sure that the ruled are not tyrannized (at least not the majority of the ruled), while allowing for a manageable number of persons to conduct the nation's (or state's) business. Even then, they have to parcel out a lot of work to committees with a lot of staff support to get things done, because most matters of policy are not at all simple, but involve a lot of research and discussion to find a reasonable solution. Additionally, by not foreclosing too many policy options, we keep most discussion within the system, instead of encouraging political movements trying to smash the system. It is because the Socialists were allowed a place in European parliaments that the revolutionary Communists were defanged, and eventually sat in parliament themselves.........
