I was discussing the abstract principle of a federal income tax, not the particulars of current tax law.......

This makes the Federal tax laws unjust. There is no other word for it.

I was responding to Tim's statement that high income taxes were unjust. I reacted to the "high" and the "income taxes." I don't see anything inherently unjust about having an income tax or the rates being high.

You are now adding the snarl that is the tax code. On that we can more easily agree. Our particular tax code, in addition to being wrongheaded, stupid, infuriating, etc., could perhaps be labeled as unfair. It is certainly incompetent on the part of the legislators to allow such a thing to stand. I still shy away, however, from unjust.

P.S. When I do my taxes, I just throw all the figures at Turbotax, hold my nose, and pay whatever amount it comes up with. I'll bet a lot of people do that. Perhaps we could mount a campaign to unscramble the tax code on the grounds that Turbotax, a non-government entity, is effectively setting our tax payments for us. <g>
