It was also a name used at times by the Jews:

According to 1 Chronicles 5 <<Baal>> was a descendant of Reuben, Jacob's firstborn son, and the father of Beerah. The genealogical accounts of Saul's family listed in 1 Chronicles 9 indicates that the fourth son of Jehiel was named <<Baal. >>

so the town may have been named after one of them.

I do not know the etymological aspect of it, but it was a phrase meaning "Master of the Good Name" (that is, the Name of God). He was an itinerant preacher and faith healer, who started a kind of charismatic movement among Polish Jews, partially based on the Kabbalistic teachings of the great sage Isaac Luria, who lived most of his life in Saafed, Palestine a couple of centuries before. Luria rationalized the meaning of ritual practices through mysticism. He conceived of God putting His attributes into vessels, while preparing to create the universe. The vessels, however, could not contain them, and broke. Sparks of the Divine Presence fell into creation, to be trapped inside of matter. When, for example, one said a blessing over bread, one was helping to liberate sparks of the Divine Presence, and thus to restore the full glory of God. In this ongoing process, there would be a point where the faith and piety of the Hasidim would have accomplished so much, in repairing the cosmos, that the Messiah would finally come.......
