While the ultra-orthodoxy may be exempt from military service, they are certainly not pacifists. And the mere fact that those who devote their lives to religious scholarship do not perform military service by itself does not attest to their belief in a secular state. Were a religious zealot to become PM of Israel, that person would then be directing military policy just as our president is commander in chief. I would guess that serious internal distress would follow, including an even greater test of Israeli tolerance which even now is being severely tested. What do you imagine the US response would be to an Israeli Khomeini leading a government run by Jewish mullahs?
