Of course earnings are what matter to companies. But earnings are subject to all sorts of pro forma trickery, deferred/annualised expenses, depreciation etc. Revenues tell you how well a company's product is selling, and what sort of discounts they are having to give to "sell" that product. So, wrt the point I was making about how much Oracle actually got for that Reuters job, I think revs are the relevant number to watch.
