According to a survey conducted by Nikkei Market Access, the production will continue to grow steadily, doubling in 2002 to about 1,630,000 units. However, for the time being, much of the demand is limited to the Japanese market. In order to maintain a high growth rate, it will be necessary to have on the market products that make more use of the distinctive advantages of TFT-LCD televisions, such as portability. This year became the starting year for wide dissemination of television units with TFT-LCD monitors. At the beginning of the year, Sharp Corp. made a big start with the release of its line-up of 13-inch, 15-inch, and 20-inch units. And the maker set the recommended retailer price for the 13-inch unit at 88,000 yen, that is, far below the big 100,000-yen mark. (118.90 yen = US$1) Sharp's competitors welcomed the move of pricing the 13-inch model far below 100,000 yen, because it had a big impact in the market, and created a positive mood overall. That raised the recognition level of TFT-LCD monitor televisions. There is no doubt that the production of TFT-LCD televisions will continue to grow at a high rate even after 2003. However, after 2002, growth rates as high as 200 percent will decline. The reason is that even around 2005, the main market for TFT-LCD television will still be Japan. Another is that the market will not fully accept TFT-LCD television units of similar size to a point where people replace the existing large-size television units of 20-inches or more with them. Also, TV tuners are likely to be mounted increasingly with TFT-LCD monitors of PCs, which will introduce more competition into the market. For these reasons, the number of units produced in 2005 is forecast at 4,250,000 units. TFT-LCD will continue to grow at a high rate even after 2003 if there are new TFT-LCD monitor TV models with features that users cannot find in CRTs. Most promising are mid-sized units of 13-inches and below. There are many makers that are pinning their expectations on the market for easy-to-carry units by the user at home.
