For starters, the equivalent of the golden rule is found in many religions besides Christianity.

And why would it mutate? The Iliad, the Odyssey, and the Old Testament were handed down orally for many generations with little change.
Mutate? The words don't have to change. The interpretation can change.
Or the words can simply be ignored.
As happens quite often with the golden rule.

You want to assign all goodness in the world to religion. If you get past that, you can begin to see what is going on.
