Laz, thats why I called them a necessary evil.
Hokay. Got it.

Low taxes meet the necessary part with very little evil. High and complex taxes that dig themselves in to all
aspects of life, cost a large fraction of our income and require a large amount of paperwork aren't necessary and
the evil begins to become noticeable, still perhaps not a great evil, but a noticeable one.

You're describing our current situation.

Speaking of taxes: IRS loses $800 Million.

'Course, that's not real money, is it? The saying is "A billion here, a billion there, pretty soon it adds up to real money."

This is from a newsletter my wife, an Enrolled Agent and tax preparer, gets:

Tax news & updates from National Association of Enrolled Agents
Published Weekly - August 31, 2001

PITTSBURGH LOCK BOX SITUATION WORSENS . . . Senator Max Baucus (D-Montana)
Chair of the Senate Finance Committee stated that up to 40,000 tax returns containing up to
$800 million in tax payments have been lost at the lock box facility run by the Mellon Bank in
Pittsburgh. Taxpayers who sent their payments to Pittsburgh are from the New England
States-Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island-plus
New York, except for New York City, Nassau, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester counties.
Taxpayers who sent their payments to Pittsburgh should see if their checks have cleared. If
they have not, they should stop payment on the checks and submit replacement returns with
payment. Their tax returns
and checks will be credited as if paid on time with penalties waived. In addition, IRS will pick
up the cost of the stop payment orders. IRS has set up a special unit to assist these
taxpayers. It may be accessed by calling toll-free 1-800-829-1040.
