Sudan: New port planned for oil exports

Khartoum, 4 September: Minister of Energy and Mining Dr Awad Ahmed al-Jaz pointed out that work is progressing to set up a separate port for exporting petroleum products in collaboration with the Sea Ports Corporation, due to the increase of the petroleum products.

This came when the minister was addressing the first meeting of the consultative council of the Ministry of Energy and Mining.

Dr Al-Jaz said that a port was established in the past period for the gas exports in Sawakin [on Red Sea coast, northeastern Sudan].

He also referred to a trend to increase the production capacity of Khartoum and Port-Sudan oil refineries.

The minister said that efforts are continuing to expand the oil production, indicating that there are negotiations and several offers presented by international companies for exploring oil in central, northwestern and eastern Sudan.

Dr Al-Jaz also said that there are plans to increase the use and distribution of gas all over the country.

He said that the number of stations for distributing petroleum products has been increased.

The minister said that work was concentrated in the past period for exploration of minerals in Sudan, such as gold and copper, adding that mining laboratories and research had been enhanced.
He also pointed to plans to increase the water and thermal generation of electricity power.

Meanwhile, the undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Mining, Engineer Hasan Muhammad Ali Al-Tawm announced the plan to increase the oil production from 220,000 to 450,000 barrels per day by the end of the year 2004.

He said that three agreements for oil exploration in the country are expected to be signed by the end of the current year.

Engineer Al-Tawm also referred to a plan to increase the refining capacity of Khartoum Refinery from 50,000 barrels to 56,000 per day next year, besides development of Port-Sudan Oil Refinery.

He also referred to plans to boost the petrochemical industry in Sudan.
